Hatha Yoga is a holistic form of exercise, physical postures (asana), purification procedures (shatkriya), poses (mudra), yogic breathing (pranayama), moral disciplines, and meditation. Hatha yoga as it is predominantly practiced in the West consists of mostly asanas, understood as physical exercises. It is also recognised as having the added benefits of reducing stress.
Hatha Yoga utilizes not only the meditative postures but also other strengthening postures and practices that help to prepare the body and mind for the more advanced practices of meditation. Asanas teach us poise, balance and strength and are practised to improve the body's physical health - in preparation for meditation.
SHADOW YOGA
The mastery of yoga has always been achieved through the combination of three sciences. From the knowledge of Marma sthana (the 108 vital points of the body), one gains control over the bodily functions through the practice of asanas (bodily positions). Mastery of the science of Nadis (subtle channels) gives rise to inner light through the practice of pranayama (breath control). The science of Vayus (internal currents of wind) enables the practitioner to hear the quiet whispers from within that teach the secret names of the one who is the source and support of everything in this world. www.yogainthecity.co.uk
ASHTANGA YOGA
Ashtanga Yoga is a dynamic, physically demanding, flowing practice.
Please note that this class is not suitable for complete beginners. Some prior experience of yoga is required, preferably of ashtanga yoga.
This will be a led class focussing on the first half of the ashtanga primary series and the traditional finishing postures.
This practice aims to build heat in the body to help it to open, become more flexible and to release toxins, so be prepared to sweat!
Through repeated practice students will become familiar with the series of postures and eventually the focus will move away from the postures to following the breath and the gaze points for each posture, allowing the whole practice to be become more like a moving meditation.
Sharpen mind/body awareness - Work hard then learn to relax completely
